University of Oslo is inviting application for two available PhD research fellowships in Archaeology at the Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History. One of the positions is reserved for applications within Northern European prehistory (Palaeolithic to Early Iron Age). The other position is reserved for applicants in historical archaeology in Europe. The appointments are for the duration of three years and the doctoral theses are expected to be completed within the given time frame. The application deadline is 15 August 2014.

-A Master’s degree in archaeology or equivalent. The Master’s Degree has to have been achieved by the time of application.

Scholarship Description: Two PhD research fellowships in archaeology are available at the Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History, University of Oslo. It is required that the themes of the proposed projects are relevant for ongoing research at the Department. One of the positions is reserved for applications within Northern European prehistory (Palaeolithic to Early Iron Age). The other position is reserved for applicants in historical archaeology in Europe. The successful candidates must participate in the research training program organized by the Faculty of Humanities (cf. regulations and supplementary provisions for the faculty’s researcher education) and must engage in the designated research activities on a full-time basis. The purpose of the PhD Research Fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a doctoral dissertation (monograph or article-based) to be defended at a public defense for the doctoral degree. The successful candidates are expected to join the existing research milieu or network and contribute to its development.

Number of award(s): Two PhD Research Fellowships are awarded.

Duration of award(s): The appointments are for the duration of three years and the doctoral theses are expected to be completed within the given time frame.

Selection Criteria: In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on:
-the quality of the project proposal (feasibility, originality, methodological and theoretical reflection and multidisciplinary approach)
-the applicant’s academic and personal qualifications
-the applicant’s ability to complete research training
-good collaboration skills and an ability to work across disciplinary boundaries
