The Wind Energy Department of the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is seeking a PhD scholarship in Denmark. -A theoretical background in Boundary Layer Meteorology and/or Atmospheric Physics is desirable.
-Previous experience with scientific programming (FORTRAN, C), computational modeling (in particular mesoscale modeling with WRF), and Linux system is required.
-Knowledge of air-sea interaction is an advantage.
-The candidates are expected to have good written and oral communication skills in English.

Scholarship Description: The Wind Energy Department of the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is seeking a PhD student to develop coupling between the atmospheric model WRF and the spectral wave model MIKE 21 SW, for the purpose of improving the forecasts of extreme wind and wave conditions in the Danish coastal areas. Research Project Building a large number of small wind farms offshore and near shore, is an effective solution to reach the Danish governmental goal of renewable energy consumption for the near future. Currently, there is a chain of issues that cannot be ignored in the modeling systems relevant for wind turbine design and wind power operations in offshore and coastal areas during storms. A common situation is that the estimates of extreme wind and wave conditions are based on separate atmospheric modeling and wave modeling.

Measurements have strongly suggested the importance of more accurate description of the wave conditions in the atmospheric modeling and likewise, the importance of more accurate wind input for the wave modeling. The successful candidate will work on the coupling of the atmospheric model WRF and the wave model MIKE 21 SW. The work involves (1) investigation of the coupling strategy for WRF and MIKE 21 SW (2) study and modification of the PBL schemes in WRF to take into account of the wave input (3) Analysis of the wind and wave fields from the coupled modeling. The PhD project is a part of a Danish R&D project, where three major partners are: Wind Energy Department of the Technical University of Denmark, Danish Hydrological Institute and Uni. Research at Bergen University. The student will join a dynamical program working on both meteorological and wave and oceanic aspects that are related to offshore wind and wave applications.
