Scholarship Description: The Institute of Infection and Immunity conducts internationally recognized research in the areas of infection, immunity and inflammation. The long-term objective of this research is to develop or redefine treatment strategies for use in inflammatory disorders, infectious diseases and cancer. The aim of the PhD studentship is to offer a broad knowledge and expertise in T-cell immunology-based disease processes at the molecular and cellular level, with a particular focus on influenza vaccine design. Centrally supported state of-the-art technology platforms, genomics, Medicine courses continue over proteomics, lipidomics, imaging and flow cytometry with expertise in cell and molecular biology. The position is funded by the Welsh government through the highly prestigious Sêr Cymru NRN in Health and Life Sciences 3 year PhD studentship scheme. T-cells defend us against germs: The importance of CD4+ T-cells to human health is immense. CD4+ T-cells can mediate immunity to pathogens and cancer, and they hold the key to vaccination. CD4+ T-cells also cause a large number of autoimmune diseases, play an important role in organ transplant rejection and are responsible for some allergies.

The devastating effects of low numbers of CD4+ T-cells are all too evident in HIV/AIDS. Influenza vaccination: Most influenza vaccines use strain matched inactivated virus to induce protective antibody responses. However, they are not universally effective. More recent data indicate that influenza vaccines that can induce cross-reactive cellular immune responses (B and T-cell responses) and might hold the key for new vaccine strategies capable of providing longer lasting protection against both seasonal and pandemic strains. However, the mechanisms that mediate cross-reactive cellular immunity to influenza are not well understood. Here, we will engineer enhanced CD4+ T-cell influenza peptides that could be used to generate superior influenza cross protection during vaccination.
