The position is funded by the Welsh government through the highly prestigious Sêr Cymru NRN in Health and Life Sciences 3 year PhD studentship scheme. T-cells defend us against germs: The importance of CD4+ T-cells to human health is immense. CD4+ T-cells can mediate immunity to pathogens and cancer, and they hold the key to vaccination. CD4+ T-cells also cause a large number of autoimmune diseases, play an important role in organ transplant rejection and are responsible for some allergies.

The devastating effects of low numbers of CD4+ T-cells are all too evident in HIV/AIDS. Influenza vaccination: Most influenza vaccines use strain matched inactivated virus to induce protective antibody responses. However, they are not universally effective. More recent data indicate that influenza vaccines that can induce cross-reactive cellular immune responses (B and T-cell responses) and might hold the key for new vaccine strategies capable of providing longer lasting protection against both seasonal and pandemic strains. However, the mechanisms that mediate cross-reactive cellular immunity to influenza are not well understood. Here, we will engineer enhanced CD4+ T-cell influenza peptides that could be used to generate superior influenza cross protection during vaccination.

Duration of award(s): Global Fellows Program is a 12-month fellowship program.

What does it cover? Acumen provides Fellows with a stipend that covers reasonable monthly living costs for the duration of the yearlong program. The stipend is designed to cover only costs associated and incurred during the program. You should not expect to save any money during this year or to use this stipend to cover previous expenses (e.g., student loans). Stipend amounts will vary for the country placement portion of the Fellowship, adjusting for the cost of living in different countries, but these stipends are also designed to cover the basic costs associated with safe yet frugal living.
