National Security Education Program (NSEP) is funding Boren Fellowships for USA Students to Study Abroad, 2014/15. Boren Fellowships provide up to $30,000 to U.S. graduate students. Fellowships are provided in the field of Agricultural and Food Sciences, Area Studies, Business and Economics, Computer and Information Sciences, Foreign Languages, Health and Biomedical Science, History, International Affairs, Law, Mathematics, Sciences and Engineering, Social Sciences and Political Science and Policy Studies.  Application should be submitted till January 28, 2014.

Course Level: The Fellowships are available for pursuing undergraduate degree level.
Scholarship Provider:  National Security Education Program (NSEP).
 Scholarship can be taken at: Study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.

Eligibility: Boren Fellowships are for graduate students. You are eligible to apply for a Boren Fellowship if you are:
-A U.S. citizen at the time of application
-Either matriculated in or applying to a graduate degree program at a U.S. college or university located within the United States and accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.  Boren Fellows must remain matriculated in their graduate programs for the duration of the fellowship and may not graduate until the fellowship is complete.
-Planning an overseas program that meets home institution standards in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.  Boren Fellowships are not for study in the United States.

Scholarship Description: Boren Fellowships provide up to $30,000 to U.S. graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate education through specialization in area study, language study, or increased language proficiency. Boren Fellowships support study and research in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.

Duration of award(s): Boren Fellowship awards are made for a minimum of 12 weeks and maximum of 24 months. Boren-funded programs can begin no earlier than June 1, 2014 and no later than March 1, 2015. Overseas programs may begin no later than March 1, 2015 and can be no longer than one year. Boren Fellowships promote long term linguistic and cultural immersion.  Therefore, all overseas study must be a minimum of 12 weeks, and preference will be given to applicants proposing overseas programs of 6 months or longer. However, applicants proposing overseas programs of 3-6 months, especially those in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields are encouraged to apply.

What does it cover? Boren Fellowships provide up to $24,000 for overseas study. In addition, Boren Fellowships can provide limited funding for domestic language study that will supplement the overseas component. The maximum award for a combined overseas and domestic program is $30,000.

Selection criteria: Fellowship award recipients will be selected on the basis of merit with consideration for:
-Boren Awards preferences: commitment to government service, preferred countries, preferred languages, preferred fields of study, study abroad for a full academic year,
-a clear explanation of the relevance of the applicant’s country, language, and proposed program of study to U.S. national security, broadly defined;
-a demonstrated academic excellence;
-a clear plan to develop and/or advance foreign language competency while overseas and upon return home;
-a comprehensive, clear, and feasible study proposal;
-evidence of cultural adaptability, flexibility, and maturity required to succeed abroad.

Notification: Boren Fellowship applicants will be notified of their status by mail in late April.
