VECD Fogarty Global Health Fellowship Program in Clinical Research, 2014/15

The VECD is inviting applications for Fogarty Global Health fellowship program for clinical investigators studying diseases and conditions. This fellowship program is one-year clinical research training program for pre- and postdoctoral candidates at one of affiliated international training sites. To be eligible for the fellowships, applicants be citizens of USA or citizens of low- or middle-income countries and have the support of a VECD institution, including committed mentors in both the US and the LMIC site. Online applications should be submitted by December 1, 2013.

Scholarship Provider: The Fogarty International Center (FIC) and several collaborating institutes and centers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Scholarship can be taken at: Haiti, Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania, Vietnam, Rwanda, Brazil, Mexico, China and India

Eligibility: This fellowship is open to:
a. Postdoctoral trainees within three years of their last major training (i.e., degree program, residency, fellowship)
b. Advanced doctoral students currently enrolled in health-related doctoral programs. Persons in health-related disciplines (human or animal) such as medicine, nursing, public health, dentistry, osteopathic medicine, veterinary medicine, nutrition science, pharmacy, optometry, and others are invited to apply. Ph.D. students should have completed their Master’s-level coursework, and professional doctoral degree candidates should have completed their basic science courses and one year of clinical training. All applicants must:
-Be citizens of the United States or its territories or possessions, or persons lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence OR citizens of low- or middle-income countries as defined by the World Bank
-Have demonstrated interest in, and statement of commitment to, a career in global health research.
-Have the support of a VECD institution, including committed mentors in both the US and the LMIC site. Potential applicants that are not originating from a VECD institution should see our Frequently Asked Questions for more information.
-Preference is given to US-based postdoctoral applicants who have received support from their institution’s NIH T32 research training grants, or from VECD research-oriented global health residency and fellowship training programs.
-Applicants from Meharry Medical College, Ponce School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and U. Puerto Rico are encouraged. Potential applicants from these institutions should communicate with a VECD institution to identify mentors.

Scholarship Open for Students of Following Countries: US citizens or citizens of low-or middle-income countries as defined by the World Bank are eligible for these fellowships (The VECD fellowship requires the support of a VECD institution. Applicants must be from one of VECD’s institutions and/or has a history of collaboration/mentorship from a faculty member that is part of the VECD consortium).

Scholarship Description: The Fogarty Global Health Fellowship Program replaces the Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars & Fellows Program, representing new opportunities in global health research training. The Global Health Fellowship Program is one-year clinical research training program for pre- and post-doctoral candidates, sponsored by the Fogarty International Center (FIC) and several collaborating institutes and centers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The purpose of the program is to support a one-year mentored research fellowship for clinical investigators studying diseases and conditions in developing countries. Several training sites are available through the Vanderbilt-Emory-Cornell-Duke Consortium.

Number of award(s): Two fellowships are offered.

Duration of award (s): Fellowships provide support for 11 months.

What does it cover? Fellowships provide the following:
-11 months of stipend support. U.S. postdoctoral trainees are supported according to the NRSA federal stipend scale. Non-U.S. citizens are supported at a rate that is fair and equitable in their home institutions for their professional level. Doctoral students are supported at approximately $20,000.
-Health insurance or fringe benefits.
-Modest research training costs.
-Roundtrip travel costs to and from the fellowship site.
-A five-day workshop/orientation training on the campus of the National Institutes of Health.
-The typical fellowship cycle begins in July of each year. Fellows are required to spend at least 10 months at their assigned LMIC research site unless another timeline has been pre-approved by the VECD Consortium.

Selection Criteria: Applications are reviewed based on several criteria, including:
a. Relevance of the application to the GHF Program objectives
b. Synergy with a VECD site’s research objectives
c. Candidate backgrounds and career statements documenting student/trainee success; evidence of ability to adapt, bond, and persist under difficult circumstances; and confirming aptitude and interest in a career in global health and clinical research
d. Engagement with appropriate VECD mentors and letters of support from the proposed mentors and home institution
