The Volkswagen Foundation offers postdoctoral fellowships in the field of humanities at universities and research institutes in USA and Germany. In this funding initiative it works closely together with the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, New York. The students of USA and Germany can apply for these fellowships. Within the context of these postdoctoral fellowships, the two foundations cooperate with several universities and research institutes of excellence in Germany and in the USA.  The application deadline is October 2, 2013 for fellowships in the USA and October 16, 2013 for fellowships in Germany.

Eligibility: (a)For Germany fellowships:-The potential candidates are promising young scholars in their post-doctoral research phase based at institutions in the U.S.
-who want to strengthen their research capacity in a specific field of the humanities that can be expected to have a strong impact on their individual research profile and expertise
-Scholars who work in an interdisciplinary field are especially encouraged to apply.
-applicants should have finished their Ph. D. between July 1, 2008Â and June 30, 2012
-In exceptional cases outstanding candidates can be allowed to apply if the PhD was acquired more recently
-Candidates who apply for a fellowship at an institution not listed above will have to provide a letter from the institution of their choice stating that it will support the candidateâs application and host the person during the respective academy year
(b) For US fellowships: -The respective target group are promising young scholars in their postdoctoral research phase based at German institutions
-who want to strengthen their research capacity in a specific field of the humanities which can be expected to have a strong impact on their individual research profile and expertise.
-Scholars who work in an interdisciplinary field are especially encouraged to apply. The applicants should have finished their PhD between one and no more than five years ago.
-Candidates who apply for a fellowship at an institution not listed above will have to provide a letter by the institution of their choice stating that it will support the candidateâs application and host the person during the respective academy year.
Scholarship Open for International Students: The students of USA and Germany can apply for these fellowships.
Scholarship Description:Â With its funding initiative entitled âPostdoctoral Fellowships in the Humanities at Universities and Research Institutes in Germany and the USAâ, which began in 2011, the Volkswagen Foundation has expanded the âHarvard-Fellowshipsâ which started in 2007 to encompass other institutions of outstanding repute in the USA. In 2012 this Fellowship program was extended by a reciprocal dimension in order to furnish American postdocs with an equivalent opportunity to spend a year working on their research project in Germany. In respect of this funding initiative, the Volkswagen Foundation works in close cooperation with the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, New York, which for its part on the American side is providing three million dollars for an initial period of four years.
Number of award(s):Â Up to twelve Postdoctoral Fellowships in the Humanities for stays of one year in both Germany and US.
Duration of award(s): The fellowships are granted for 9 â" 12 months and aim at supporting postdoctoral studies in US and Germany.
What does it cover? Scholars shall be given the chance to
-pursue a research topic in the humanities in an attractive international environment,
-take advantage of rich interdisciplinary scholarly discussions and research networks,
-use the local libraries, archives, and other facilities, and to attend international conferences, symposia etc.,
-get access to a non-American university system by teaching courses to undergraduate and graduate students, depending on the needs of the relevant academic departments

Notification: (a)For Germany fellowships: The personal presentations of shortlisted candidates and the final decision of the selection committee are scheduled for February/March 2014.
(b)For US fellowships: The personal presentations of shortlisted candidates and the final decision of the selection committee are scheduled for March 2014.
How to Apply:Â Applications must be filled electronically via the electronic application system.
Scholarship Application Deadline: The application deadline is October 16, 2013 for Fellowships in Germany and October 2, 2013 for Fellowships in the US.
