Early Childhood Teacher Scholarships in Australia, 2013/14

The Queensland Government, the Department of Education, Training and Employment offers early childhood teacher scholarships in Australia. The Scholarship Program is designed to upgrade the qualifications of three-year qualified teachers working in the early childhood education and care sector whose existing qualifications. The Queensland Government has committed that by 2014 all Queensland children will have access to a kindergarten program in the year prior to Prep. Eligible employees with a three year university qualification will be able to upgrade to a four year early childhood teaching qualification. Scholarship recipients will receive support and financial assistance from the Department to undertake the approved  part-time study program while maintaining their employment in an early childhood education and care service.

Study Subject(s): The identified study pathway program, Bachelor of Education (Inservice) is through the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Completion of the scholarship study pathway will enable these teachers to be recognised as early childhood teachers for the purposes of both the National Law and QKFS

Course Level: The scholarships will assist employees currently working in an approved centre-based long day care or kindergarten service, and who already hold a minimum three year Higher Education Institution (HEI) qualification, to upgrade their qualifications to the equivalent of a four year early childhood teaching qualification.

Eligibility:  The Early Childhood Teacher Scholarship Programis open to individuals who:
-are currently employed in an approved centre-based long day care or kindergarten service;
- hold a minimum three year HEI qualification, and are eligible for entry into the identified pathway program;
- are not currently studying in the specified scholarship pathway program;
- are an Australian or New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident of Australia;
- have the support of their employer to undertake further study; and,
-have a demonstrated commitment to the early childhood education and care sector.

Scholarship Open for International Students: The applicants of Australia or New Zealand can apply for these scholarships.

Scholarship Description: The Department of Education, Training and Employment is pleased to offer scholarships for current employees of early childhood education and care services to support them to upgrade their qualifications. The scholarships will assist employees currently working in an approved centre-based long day care or kindergarten service, and who already hold a minimum three year Higher Education Institution (HEI) qualification, to upgrade their qualifications to the equivalent of a four year early childhood teaching qualification. Scholarship recipients will receive support and financial assistance from the Department to undertake the approved part-time study program while maintaining their employment in an early childhood education and care service. The information contained in this booklet is provided for people considering applying for an Early Childhood Teacher Scholarship and for their employers

Number of award(s): A maximum of 50 Early Childhood Teacher Scholarships will be awarded for this period of study.

Duration of award(s): scholarship offers for the period of study commencing in Semester 2, 2013 and concluding by the end of Semester 1, 2015. Scholarship recipients must undertake two years of continuous part-time study (4 semesters), commencing in Semester 2, 2013 and concluding at the end of Semester 1, 2015.

What does it cover? Scholarship recipients will be provided with a range of support directly related to the required study program including:
-payment of fees associated with enrolment in the study program, including student service fees; and
- study allowance of $500 per semester (maximum of $2,000 during the scholarship period) to assist with the purchase of textbooks, computer and internet access and other incidental costs associated with completing the study requirements.

Selection criteria: After the closing date, all written applications for an Early Childhood Teacher Scholarship will be reviewed and assessed by the Department. Scholarship applicants will be assessed on the basis of all information presented, including supporting statements and reports. Each application will be assessed, with particular consideration to the following:
- compliance with the scholarship eligibility criteria (refer page 3);
- relevance of previous qualifications and eligibility to undertake the identified study pathway with QUT;
-relevance of current and previous employment;
- commitment to working in the early childhood education and care sector;
- personal traits relevant to working in child care settings;
-reasons for wanting to undertake the scholarship;
-potential ability to effectively teach the kindergarten program;
- potential ability to apply learnings within the workplace;
- suitability to undertake postgraduate study; and,
level of employer commitment and support for applicant to undertake the required study program.
All applications will be assessed and ranked in order of merit, and offers of scholarships made to the most meritorious candidates, in accordance with the available quota.

Notification: It is anticipated that scholarship offers to successful applicants will on Monday, 8 July 2013 for the period of study commencing in Semester 2, 2013 and concluding by the end of Semester 1, 2015. Successful applicants will be forwarded a letter of offer of scholarship and formal Scholarship Agreement; however preliminary notification via email will precede the formal advice. Applicants must respond to the scholarship offer by Wednesday, 17 July 2013.
