Scholarship Description: Norwegian University of Science and Technology This interdisciplinary project aims to develop novel methods and algorithms for structural optimization of wind turbine towers and foundations that take uncertainties into account. Wind turbines are stochastically driven, weakly nonlinear, dynamical systems. Their design is nontrivial, since an important performance parameter is fatigue damage. This needs to be estimated from a large sample of representative environmental conditions expected during 20 years of design lifetime, typically by using extensive time-domain load simulations. Uncertainties arise both in the structural model and its parameters, in the input loading from the fluctuating environment, and due to the cost model, e.g., through assumptions made on manufacturing costs. Structural optimization under such conditions is challenging and existing approaches need to be adapted and further developed for this particular application area. Both reliability-based design optimization and robust optimization shall be studied

What does it cover? PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at wage level 50, gross NOK 420 800 before tax. The salary is adjusted according to the latest wage negotiations. There will be a 2 % deduction for superannuation.
