International Max Planck Research School for Global Biogeochemical Cycles (IMPRS-gBGC) in cooperation with the FSU Jena offers a PhD program on Soil microbial communities. The successful PhD candidate uses different biochemical, microbiological and molecular genetics methods to gain insight into the turnover of soil microbial communities and SOC. Candidate must hold a MSc degree in Microbiology, Molecular Ecology, Biogeochemistry or a related discipline. International students can apply for these fellowships. The programme application deadline is February 06, 2014.

Study Subject(s): The project will base on soil microbial communities. Project title will be , ‘the impact of soil microbial food web complexity on turnover of soil organic carbon.’
Course Level: Fellowships are available for pursuing PhD level.

Eligibility:
-a MSc degree in Microbiology, Molecular Ecology, Biogeochemistry or a related discipline
- experience in work with instrumental analytics (HPLC, GCMS), natural isotopes or in microbiological lab work (DNA, RNA)
- ability to work both independently and as a part of an integrated team environment
- good communication skills in English, both written and spoken

Scholarship Description: The IMPRS-gBGC located in Jena, Germany, offers fellowships to outstanding students interested in research on biogeochemical cycles in the Earth system. The school provides excellent research possibilities for students to obtain a PhD degree. In the study, the successful PhD candidate uses different biochemical, microbiological and molecular genetics methods to gain insight into the turnover of soil microbial communities and SOC. Methods include the measurement of 13C respiration in soil and determining the turnover of phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) of microbial communities. After you have been selected, The IMPRS-gBGC office will happily assist you with your transition to Jena. Successful applicants are expected to join in April 2014. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications receive preferential status.

What does it cover? Successful applicants are expected to join in April 2014 and will be offered financial support of ca. 1300 Euros/month to cover their living expenses plus additional benefits, including funding for the foreign research stay and support for attending conferences and summer schools. There are no tuition fees.
