University of Greenwich is offering postgraduate research scholarships for UK and international students. Scholarship is avaiavle for pursuing research project entitled “Identifying the role of over expressed cassava genes in resistance to cassava brown streak virus’ uner the supervision of Maruthi M N Gowda. Scholarships will be awarded for the duration of 3 years for full time study. The successful candidate will receive a contribution to tuition fees equivalent to the university’s Home/EU rate for the duration of their scholarship. Application deadline is 18th July 2014.

Eligibility:
-1st Class or Upper 2nd class Honours Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s degree (UK or UK equivalent) in a relevant discipline.
-For those whose first language is not English and/or if from a country where English is not the first language (as recognised by the UKBA), a language proficiency score of at least IELTS 6.5 (in all elements of the test) or an equivalent UK VISA and Immigration secure English Language Test is required, unless the degree above was taught in English and obtained in a majority English speaking country, e.g. UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, etc, as recognised by the UKVI.
-Previous experience of undertaking research (e.g. undergraduate or taught masters dissertation).
-Familiarity with both quantitative and qualitative research methods.
- Experience of plant molecular biology research with particular emphasis on plant immune response, defence signal pathways or cell cycle regulation.
- Experience of handling large scale data sets from RNA-Seq experiments.

Scholarship Description: The cassava brown streak disease has appeared in epidemic proportions in the last 10 years in eastern and central Africa, prompting many international organizations including the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization to advocate for urgent action to prevent the disease from causing widespread hunger and starvation. The Natural Resources Institute of the University of Greenwich in the UK has long been at the forefront of combating the disease, with the most recent research identifying several cassava varieties resistant to the virus using qPCR. Our research on cassava RNA-Seq has further identified over 700 genes uniquely over expressed in a resistant cassava variety.

What does it cover? Scholarship will include:
-Year 1: £13863
-Year 2: In line with RCUK rate
-Year 3: In line with RCUK rate
In addition, the successful candidate will receive a contribution to tuition fees equivalent to the university’s Home/EU rate for the duration of their scholarship. International applicants will need to pay the remainder tuition fee of £7,279 for the 2014/15 session and is subject to an annual increase.
