Scholarship Description: The Europe next to Europe Program offers research Fellowships to young scholars in the humanities and social sciences. The host institution, New Europe College-Institute for Advanced Study (NEC) supports its Fellows by providing excellent conditions for their research and by establishing a strong and productive network among academics in the country and beyond. The institute has acquired a unique position in the region and has established itself as a research center of international reputation. Beyond the particular geographic focus of this program, the merits of the candidates will be decided exclusively on the basis of the quality and feasibility of their individual projects. It is not our intention to propose an overarching scientific theme against which the appropriateness of this or that project proposed by the candidates might be measured.

We are, however, interested in a number of larger questions that might inspire the applicants. Thus, projects may address aspects related to our common past and to the rich texture of interrelations that could be unveiled; analyze shared features of culture and art in this region, or seemingly more down-to-earth customs of daily life; they might gauge the weight of the historical inheritance in shaping current attitudes and in (possibly) explaining recent conflicts; identify and compare different â€" sometimes even divergent â€" developments stemming from the inclusion of this or that country in a different larger area of influence: the Habsburg Empire or the Ottoman one; look into the complex question of religious beliefs and of their impact on present-day attitudes, and into the relationship between such beliefs and processes of nation-building; or inquire into the ethnic make-up of the region and into the ways in which it has been instrumentalized at various times; they might also choose to consider gender issues, in a region that has been, overtime, predominantly “patriarchal”. In paying attention to current challenges, projects may investigate the diverse political, economic and social arrangements and dynamics in these countries, and conjecture how they speak for their prospects of integration into the EU, or for the strengthening of their position within it.

Candidates can apply for one academic year (10 months, starting October, 2014), or one term (5 months, starting October, 2014, or March, 2015). Once chosen, fellows are expected to take part in the weekly seminar at the institute together with the other scholars present at NEC, and in other scientific events organized by NEC. They have the opportunity to profit from NEC’s widespread international network and its high-quality guest lecturers program. The institute’s working languages are English, French, and German; a good command of English is required. Fellows are assisted in all practical matters concerning travel, residence, and research in Bucharest. Toward the end of their stay, they are required to summarize their research outcomes in a scholarly paper (in English, French, or German).
